Space Marine Terminator Librarian

Over the past month or so I have started assembling and painting my second army. Because I have the time (and patience) I've decided to customise a lot of the models. I want it to have a unique feel to it. I think all the time having to make my own 'Nids special characters has ruined me.

Regardless I decided to kitbash my own Librarian in Terminator armor because while the actual model looks nice I prefer a more personal touch. (I also believe that my marines aren't stupid enough to go around without a helmet on.) Seeing as they do not sell a librarian model with a helmet I thought I would put something together myself.

I started with a Grey Knight Terminator. They have very ornate armor and the models come with a psychic hood as standard.

First thing I did was green stuff a tabbard for him. Give him a very Librarianish feel.

Next I took the torso, drilled it for magnets (3mm x 2mm) so that I can switch his arms out later depending on loadout, and then made the book you can see on the back. Its from a ravenwing landspeeder courtesy of a bits site. Once I shaved off the Dark Angels heraldry I glued on a couple of skulls and then put used plastic rods and a little winged skull backpack accessory to round it out. The rods line up very well with the spine of the book. 3mm rods on the book and a 5mm rod for the base.

Next, seeing as I plan to run him with a force axe and storm shield I got a space marine sergeant storm shield and thunder hammer. Trimmed off the top of the thunder hammer and replaced it with the blade from a Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard Glaive (again thanx bits sites). Then magnetised the arms and shoulderpads. For the shoulderpads I used my smaller magnets (1mm x 3mm) and merely drilled a recess in the shoulder to line up on. With the magnet in the arm combined with the one in the torso they provide adequate attraction to keep it in place without having to keep adding more magnets.

I'm still wondering if I should add cabling from the psychic hood to his helmet or not to bother seeing as I like the way he looks as is. I haven't started painting yet but I will keep you posted (hopefully this week.) and you can judge for yourselves. This is him blu-tacked together in all his glory. I will probably add a purity seal to the back of his leg somewhere but again I'll play it by ear before I start painting. Like I said, I kinda like him as is.

Many thanks go out to my bits suppliers at

and

All up I think this guy cos me a little under $25 in bits which I think leaves me ahead of the curve on GW's $40 model especially as with 2 new arms I can run him  as Tigurius or whichever loadout I prefer.

...

Well its been a few months since I put up the tutorial on how to put this guy together. Now finally I can show a pic of him painted and assembled. The colour scheme for my space marines is heavily on the black with blue and silver highlights and I think this guy demonstrates the scheme beautifully.

As you can see I still need to do a tiny bit of work on the tabard and the skull over it but I haven't had to blend highlights on 'cloth' before so I'm going to get a little practice in first. Other than that I love the model and the flexibility of being able to switch out his options. I've picked up a Terminator librarian staff arm and will shortly be drilling and magnetising it to fit this guy.

Hope this tutorial has been helpful to your own projects.
